What is PBIS?
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture and needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all youth by making targeted misbehavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional.
How can you use PBIS at home?
- Set clear, consistent rules.
- Make certain the environment is safe and worry-free.
- Show interest in the child's activities.
- Provide appropriate and engaging playthings.
- Give clear directions, one at a time.
- Encourage children often and generously.
- Set a good example.
- Help children see how their actions affect others.
- Encourage self-control by providing meaningful choices.
- Focus on the desired behavior, rather then the one to be avoided.
- Build children's images of themselves as trustworthy, responsible, and cooperative.
- Expect the best from the child.
- Say "Yes" whenever possible.
- Notice and pay attention to children when they do things right.
- Take action before a situation gets out of control.
