| | Welcome to our sixth grade class in Room 5 at Palermo School. Parents are invited to phone me or visit the school any time that you have a question concerning your child's progress. Progress reports will be sent home during the 6th week of each 12-week trimester. In addition, I can print out a grade report at any time for a student. Please let me know, and I will print one out. I have always found parents to be very supportive of good classroom behavior so their children have a good environment for maximum learning. If your child develops any difficulty following the rules, the school or I will notify you. As well, I hope that you will advise me if at any time your child has a problem, academic, social, or emotional. I consider it a great privilege and responsibility to be your child's teacher this year. I will do my best this year to ensure that your child has a motivating and safe learning experience in the classroom. However, I cannot do this alone: I need your help. We both need to be partners in the learning process. I need you to encourage your child at home by ensuring that he/she has completed his/her assignments, and help him/her study for quizzes, if necessary. Finally, I have included some information that may help answer some of your questions about our classroom.

| | Absences: If your child is absent, they must bring a written excuse with him/her upon returning to school. Birthdays: If you want to bring a snack to the class on your child’s birthday, please feel free to do so. This is not mandatory. Please let me know at least two days in advance in case there is a conflict with the schedule or curriculum activities. Class Rules: Our classroom rules are... - Follow Directions
- Stay Seated and On Task
- Be Respectful
- Be Prepared
Conferences: Parent-Teacher conference week is scheduled for November 17th-21st. The school will operate on a minimum day schedule in order to accommodate the conferences. You may schedule a conference at any time during the school year if you have any concerns. Correspondence: Feel free to call me at school or make an appointment to meet with me before or after school. Many parents have found it convenient to send me e-mail at smccoy@palermoschools.org which I check during the school day and at home. Grades: Grades will be determined by student’s ability to meet the grade level standards. The grading scale used in my classes is as follows:
Letter Grade Scoring - A = 90-100%
- B = 80-89%
- C = 68-79%
- D = 50-67%
- F = 49%-lower
Rubric Scoring - 5 = 100-95%
- 4 = 94-80%
- 3 = 79-68%
- 2 = 67-50%
- 1 = 49%-lower
Homework: Each student is given a Bulldog Planner in which students are expected to record assignments and homework. Students will be given time at the beginning of each week to record that week’s assignments and due dates. The planners will be checked each Friday during Power Hour by homeroom teachers. I expect my students to complete their homework neatly and to the best of their ability. If students fail to complete their homework, after school tutoring will be assigned. Progress Reports: Progress Reports will be sent home during the 6th week of each 12-week trimester. Please check the school calendar for exact dates. Reading: Each student at Palermo School is expected to read for 30 minutes each day. A Reading Log will be passed out by the Language Arts teacher every Monday. Students are to record the title, start and end pages, and a short summary of what they read. Parents will need to initial each night to help keep the students accountable and honest. Supplies: Palermo School provides each student with a 3-ring binder, dividers, pencil pouch, and Bulldog Planner. Students are expected to bring these items to school everyday. Each Friday during Power Hour, teachers will check to see that students have these items. Time will also be given to help students organize their binders, if necessary. If students lose these items, they can purchase a replacement at the school office or buy an equivalent at a store. Testing: Palermo School gives Benchmark Assessments at the end of each trimester. These Benchmark Assessments include: Math, Language Arts, SRI (reading), and writing. The results of the common assessments will be on the Trimester Report card. Sixth grade students also take the state mathematics and language arts tests in May. | |
